Qualifications/Experience: Consultant since 1969 to arts institutions, concentrating
in planning/research/marketing/funding. Have done projects all over the United
States, but most of my work has been concentrated between Boston and Washington.
Here are percentages of time that each of the four concentrations takes, and a
description of each: PLANNING (40%): "helping arts institutions decide who
they are and what they want to do" RESEARCH (20%): "surveying current audiences
and potential audiences (markets)" MARKETING (20%): "analyzing current marketing
and planning future marketing" FUNDING (10%): very selective and occasional
work in fund-raising; examples are a capital campaign 1981-1983 for Peterborough
Players in NH, and four capital and pledge campaigns for my church in New York
City. EDUCATION

Wesley Zeigler & Associates works with many independent and qualified consultants.
Mr.
Zeigler graduated from Harvard College and attended the Yale School of Drama,
then received two grants from the Ford Foundation's Program for Administrative
Interns. He later served as the Executive Director of Theatre Communications Group.
From 1972-1976, he was vice-president of Arts Development Associates: before and
since those years, he has worked as an independent consultant with his associates.
He has taught at Brooklyn College, City University of New York, Adelphi, NYU,
and SUNY-Purchase. His first book, "Regional Theatre: The Revolutionary Stage"
was published in 1973. His most recent book is "Arts in Crisis: The National Endowment
for the Arts Versus America" (1994). He is a consulting editor of the "Journal
of Arts Management, Law and Society." RECENT
& REPRESENTATIVE CONSULTING WORK: - 2001: Middlesex County
Cultural & Heritage Commission, New Brunswick NJ. MCCHC is the county cultural
agency. Zeigler was engaged to lead a survey of the county's very diverse population
as a first step in planning. We created a questionnaire in four languages that
was distributed throughout the county, and also interviewed citizens at gathering
places. The project was completed with a formal report. - 2000: Newark
Arts Council, Newark NJ. Newark Arts Council is a long-standing organization that
has received a new energy with the appointment of its first full-time executive
director in late 1990s. NAC was asked by the City of Newark to create a Cultural
Plan for the city. Zeigler was engaged in the early fall of 2000 to be the writer
of the Cultural Plan. He reviewed all the work that had been done, talked further
with some people, and completed the plan in late December of 2000. - 1995
and 1999: Community Theater in Morristown, NJ is a former movie/vaudeville
house that was reclaimed to become a cultural center in 1993-94. Zeigler was engaged
twice for planning; first to do a business plan and economic impact study, and
then in 1999 to do further planning for expansion. - 1981: The Arts
for Living Center at Henry Street Settlement in New York City is one of the city's
primary community art centers. It provides performing and visual arts events and
training for young people. Zeigler was engaged to do a full study of the ALC operation,
planning for its future. His work included interviewing people at ALC and HSS,
market research of audiences in attendance at ALC events, funding analysis and
funding planning (including ALC's first DCA grants). A major report was provided.
- 1980 and 1987:
New York Philharmonic, Lincoln Center, NYC. In 1980, Zeigler was engaged to do
writing for an endowment campaign being conducted by the NYP development office.
In 1987, he was engaged to do a full study of all NYP marketing. A primary part
of this study was a detailed comparison of NYP Marketing with marketing of numerous
other Lincoln Center and NYC performing arts institutions. The results were a
170 page written report. - 1989 and 1991: Howard County, Maryland
is between Baltimore and Washington DC; its primary city is Columbia (a planned
community by James Rouse). Zeigler was engaged twice: first in 1989 to do a community
needs assessment, and then in 1991 to creat an Arts Plan based on the assessment
findings. In 1989, Zeigler led a four-member team that examined facilities, programs,
audiences, funding, and plans. This led to a 58-page report that described the
current "state of the arts" in Howard County and its potential. In 1991, Zeigler
was re-engaged to work with the Howard County Arts Council on formulating a Plan
for the Arts in Howard County, which led to an NEA grant and the reclaiming of
a high school auditorium to be a performing arts hall for the community. FEE:
